Scholarship Description:
We focus on researching the behaviors of various engineering materials (metals, ceramics, semiconductors, polymer composites) under multiphysical fields (light, electricity, heat, sound, radiation), including deformation, fracture, heat conduction, and ionic transport. After fifteen years of dedicated effort, our team has developed the CAC software for large-scale multiscale material simulations on supercomputing platforms, which has been preliminarily applied to various scientific and engineering problems.
Our relevant work has been published in leading journals in materials, physics, and mechanics, such as Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, JMPS, IJP, PRL, PRB, and Advanced Materials. These results have attracted attention from academia and industry, with our current partners including Georgia Tech, the University of Florida, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, Johns Hopkins University, Iowa State University, Michigan State University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, GE, and Schlumberger.
Our research projects are primarily funded by the National Science Foundation. Team members have independent offices equipped with personal computers and access to multiple supercomputing platforms. Currently, the group consists of three PhD students and one postdoctoral researcher. Graduates can be recommended for postdoctoral research or industry roles based on their interests.
North Carolina State University (NCSU), established in 1887, is a prominent public university in North Carolina and one of the largest in the U.S. The campus is well-equipped and scenic, with the engineering program ranked 25th nationally (US News) and 12th among public schools. Located in Raleigh, the state capital, the city is safe, with a pleasant climate ranging from 0° to 30°. It is four hours from the Great Smoky Mountains and two hours from beautiful Atlantic beaches, featuring numerous freshwater lakes and parks, making it suitable for study, work, and life. The city boasts a diverse culture with a wide variety of cuisines, especially notable for its Chinese food (Sichuan, Hunan, Cantonese, Fujian).
NCSU is part of the world-renowned Research Triangle Park (RTP) alongside Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. RTP hosts many innovative internet and tech companies, including Lenovo, IBM, Cisco Systems, RTI International, and Biogen. It has been ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S., with steady population growth among the top three nationwide for several years.
