Scholarship Description:
The Tan lab studies the biological basis of “gut sensations”, i.e. how gut bacteria send signals to the host to influence physiology and behavior. Using mice as a mammalian model, the lab investigates how diet modulates the gut microbiome, health and behaviors. His lab also studies the brain-gut axis, to uncover host-microbiome interactions in chronic stress and major depressive disorders. Being multidisciplinary in nature, the scope of research spans diverse expertise from molecular biology to systems neuroscience, physiology and behavior. The candidate should be exceptionally self-motivated, a team player, willing to assist with essential laboratory tasks and learn new skills, and is expected to have relevant experience in one or more of these areas (e.g., neural circuits and behavior, single cell RNA-seq, etc). A candidate with knowledge and skills in bioinformatics is preferred.
Eligibility criteria:
Strong publication record and strong scientific writing skills.
Knowledge of bioinformatics (scRNAseq, metabolomics) preferred.
Experience in animal handling (mice) preferred
Highly motivated and conscientious
Able to work independently, as well as work effectively in a team environment
Good organizational, verbal, and interpersonal skills
