Dr. Ranjie Xu’s lab in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at Purdue University is recruiting PhD students and postdocs to study neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach, including stem cells, molecular and cellular biology, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, single-cell RNA sequencing, electrophysiology, pharmacology, animal behavior, and various imaging techniques. Our previous research successfully developed a unique hiPSC-based neuro disease model system, including in vitro human brain organoids and in vivo human-mouse chimeric brain models, to investigate the roles of human neurons and microglia in brain development and neuro diseases (Cell Stem Cell, 2019; Nature Communications, 2020; Stem Cell Reports, 2021; bioRxiv, https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.10.28.620680, 2024).

Available Subjects:
Neuroscience/Stem Cell research (disease modeling and cellular immunotherapy).
Eligibility criteria:
- Direction 1 – Neuro Disease Modeling: The lab uses human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) models to explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human brain development and neurodegeneration, focusing on human neurons, microglia, and neuro-immune interactions.
- Direction 2 – Cellular Immunotherapy: The lab is developing new hiPSC-based cellular immunotherapy strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.
- Postdoc applicants must have or be about to obtain a PhD and/or MD in biosciences, neuroscience, stem cells, immunology, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in bioinformatics, electrophysiology, optogenetics, immunology, molecular and cellular biology, or stem cells. Applicants should possess strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to work independently and collaboratively.
